Diesel Valve Cover Shopping Guide
An engine valve cover protects the valvetrain and helps seal oil inside the top of the engine. On many diesel applications, it also works with the crankcase ventilation system through built-in passages, breather ports, baffles, or connections for external hoses. The right replacement therefore depends on more than appearance: engine family, model year, material, sealing components, and the application-specific ventilation system all matter.

What Does an Engine Valve Cover Do?
The valve cover sits above the cylinder head and shields components such as rocker arms, valve springs, and related valvetrain hardware from dirt and debris. A valve cover gasket seals the joint between the cover and cylinder head, while fasteners hold the cover evenly against the sealing surface.
On a diesel engine, the cover may also be part of the crankcase ventilation path. Combustion gases that pass the piston rings, commonly called blow-by, must leave the crankcase through the factory ventilation system or an application-specific breather setup. Depending on the engine and valve cover design, oil vapor may be managed through internal baffling, a CCV connection, an external catch can, or a vent hose.

What Changes on a 6.7L Cummins CCV System?
On 6.7L Cummins applications, the factory valve-cover assembly works with the crankcase breather and filter system. Aftermarket covers that remove the factory filter housing require a complete alternative ventilation route. Depending on the selected cover and model year, that may involve a product-specified closed-return system, external catch can, or vent-hose arrangement. Confirm the required hose, fittings, sensor provisions, internal baffling, and oil-control strategy before ordering. An undersized or poorly routed setup can carry oil mist out of the breathers and should not be treated as a cure for excessive engine blow-by.
Billet or Cast Aluminum Valve Covers
Cast Aluminum
Cast aluminum covers are formed by pouring molten alloy into a mold, then machining important surfaces and openings. They are generally the more affordable choice and can suit daily-driven, stock, or mildly modified trucks when the selected design matches the engine and ventilation setup.
Billet Aluminum
Billet valve covers are CNC-machined from solid aluminum stock. Selected SPELAB billet models use 6061-T6 aluminum. CNC machining allows precise sealing surfaces, openings, and mounting features, which can be useful for modified engines, custom engine bays, towing or work-truck builds, and owners who place a higher value on finish and dimensional consistency. Billet construction normally costs more than casting and does not remove the need for correct gasket preparation and bolt torque.
Design Details That Matter

Sealing surface: The cover, gasket, fasteners, cylinder-head surface, tightening order, and torque must work together to control oil leaks.

Clearance: Check wiring, ignition coils, glow-plug harnesses, control-module brackets, head studs, intake parts, fuel-system components, and valvetrain height where applicable.

Heat-cycle stability: On engines equipped with composite factory covers, repeated heat cycles can contribute to distortion of the cover or sealing rail, making a gasket-only repair less effective. A rigid aluminum replacement can help maintain a flatter sealing surface. This reason does not apply equally to every platform: some Duramax applications already use aluminum factory rocker covers and may be upgraded for sealing design, rigidity, ventilation routing, clearance, or appearance instead.

Finish and customization: Selected products are available in silver, black, red, blue, anodized, or custom finishes. Color and logo options depend on the product and current variant availability.
How to Choose the Right Valve Cover

Confirm the engine and model year. "Cummins," "Powerstroke," or "Duramax" alone is not enough. Check displacement, engine code where applicable, model year, and truck model before ordering.

Identify why the cover is being replaced. A damaged cover, leaking gasket, engine-bay appearance upgrade, clearance requirement, and crankcase-ventilation change are different jobs and may require different parts.

Choose the construction for the build. Cast aluminum may be enough for a stock daily driver. Billet construction may make more sense when machining detail, custom routing, appearance, or a modified application justifies the additional cost.

Check the installation package and ventilation plan. Do not assume every cover includes the same gasket, hose, filter, bracket, fitting, or catch can. A towing truck, work truck, daily driver, and competition build may also use different CCV, PCV, vent-hose, or catch-can arrangements. Read the selected product and variant details before checkout.
Do Not Blame the Valve Cover Too Quickly
Fresh oil along the gasket line, visible cover damage, or a distorted sealing rail can point to a valve-cover problem. However, oil around the top of an engine can also travel from another source. Clean the area, inspect the gasket line after running the engine, and check nearby fittings, breather connections, and oil sources before ordering parts.
Excessive crankcase pressure deserves separate diagnosis. A restricted ventilation path, incorrect catch-can plumbing, worn piston rings, or high blow-by can continue to push oil past seals even after a new cover is installed. Milky residue can also be related to condensation or internal coolant contamination and should not automatically be blamed on the valve cover.
Installation and Support Resources
Installation difficulty varies widely across Cummins, Powerstroke, Duramax, HEMI, and Big Block Chevy applications. Always use the torque specifications and tightening sequence for the exact engine, model year, gasket, and fastener combination. Recheck the gasket area and breather connections after the first complete heat cycle, following the instructions supplied with the selected product.
