Powerstroke Delete Kit: Installation Tips & Setup Guidelines
Installing a Powerstroke tuner delete kit is relatively straightforward if you understand your engine platform and follow essential steps carefully. Whether you’re deleting emissions on a 6.0L, 6.4L, or 6.7L Powerstroke, the guidelines below help prevent install errors and tuning failure.
General Prep:
-
Use a 10A+ battery charger during flashing to prevent voltage dips (#327 / #399 errors)
-
Format your SD card to FAT32, max 8GB, and load SPELAB’s latest firmware
-
Always disconnect your negative battery cable before installation
-
Unplug all emission sensors (DPF, EGR, DEF) before tuning to avoid fault detection
Mini Maxx V1 / V2 Setup Notes (6.0–6.7L):
-
When prompted, select your exact year/make/model—misidentifying a 6.4L as 6.7L is a common error
-
After flashing, go to Diagnostics > Clear DTCs to wipe any lingering codes
-
If you see “Warm-Up Mode” or “Defueling,” you can disable or customize it under the setup menu
-
Avoid smart chargers or booster packs—they often interrupt mid-write
Commander Tuner Tips (2020–2022 6.7L):
-
Commander features auto VIN detection—give it 30 seconds on first startup
-
Make sure the bypass cable connects to the correct port (typically 5th pin on the green harness behind dash)
-
Perform updates using a Windows 10/11 PC only—Mac OS may corrupt file structure
-
Once flashing begins, do not shut off the ignition or disconnect power. This can trigger engine recovery mode
Proper setup ensures your 6.7 Powerstroke delete tuner or DEF delete kit installs without issue, unlocking the full potential of your engine while avoiding the hassle of limp mode or reflash recovery.
FAQ
Q1: Does the tuner need to stay plugged in after tuning?
A: No. Once installed, the delete tune remains active even if the tuner is removed. However, it will default to “No Power” mode unless the tuner is reconnected to switch modes.
Q2: What does “Engine Recovery Mode” mean?
A: It occurs when the flash is interrupted or fails due to low voltage or unplugging mid-install. Reconnect the same tuner, return to stock, and reinstall the delete tune. If the truck won’t start, dealer or tuner-based reflash may be needed.
Q3: Does Mini Maxx V2 support SOTF (Shift-On-The-Fly)?
A: Yes, on compatible 2011–2019 6.7L Powerstroke trucks. However, some older PCMs or trucks lacking hardware support may require re-flashing to change power levels.
Q4: What advanced features does the Commander Tuner offer?
A: VIN auto-detection, cold-start fuel optimization, smart idle controls, high-altitude turbo adjustments, and real-time ECM monitoring. Designed for 2020–2022 6.7L Powerstroke models.
Q5: What do error codes #399, #327, or C747 mean?
A:
-
#399/#327 = SD card not recognized or unstable voltage during flash
-
C747 = ECM is locked or the vehicle is not supported (common in 4500/5500 chassis models)
Fix: Reformat SD to FAT32, confirm correct platform, and use a steady 10A+ charger
Q6: Will I still get CELs after DEF delete?
A: Not if done correctly. Disconnect all DEF-related sensors and use updated tunes. Some early 6.7L Powerstroke ECUs may require newer firmware files to suppress emissions-related DTCs.

Excellent quality.
I have a 2017 Ram 2500 2wd and looking to make it last as long as possible. With extra fluid capacity and cooling fins, I felt that this is better than stock. The hardware that came with it looks great and appreciated because I was going to replace the old anyways. Even the gasket is heavy-duty and looks like it's reusable if needed. Not a thin felt like material but a thicker quality rubber. Shipping was like 4 days. I am pleased with my purchase and would highly recommend it.
Highly recommend clean, good quality, fast shipping. 100% haves my business is had my power coated
Everything went in and on very smoothly everything fit and as should only thing I will say is does not come with bolts for up pipe and the gaskets are decent but would upgrade to some mahle gaskets and get a set of ppe up pipe bolts other than that very solid affordable set of parts the coating on the up pipe will burn off due to heat but it does not affect performance of part or affect truck at all definitely recommend if your looking for performance parts while trying to save some money it definitely gave my Lly duramax the tone and power I was looking for!
I received a box with no grid heater delete got a hold of customer service and receive one in three days. Fantastic service.
Install was easy works great at a fraction of the price. Heat element started truck at 8 degrees the other day just like the original grid heater did.
Worth the money and 1/4 of the price 100% recommend them i run the pipe 1 my dad runs there newer style both are worth the money. And just put 1 on my father's in-law truck.
Installed on ford e350 super duty dana 70fit was perfect
Having trouble keeping clap rings on the hose and pipe they keep blowing off when boost pressure coming up.
Perfect fitment and function.
I have a 2005 ram with the 5.7 I had a 2018 challenger with duel coil packs so I got this valve cover to fit and used the mmx adapters and boom! Looks amazing. Only thing is the screws and lock washers are not good...torque specs will break the lock washers and I think one coil thread hole got stripped but other than that I got it too work. Thanks!
Install was easy as long as you take the fuel line off the manifold and reinstall it after bolting down the intake. It also helps having an intake heater since removing the grid heater. No more check engine lights after a cold start. The quality of Spelabs products are great. And the price point is even better.
combined it with the intake horn, new intercooler and pipe kit. added the valve cover. Seems to function well. instructions were adequate- could be better. I assume a few of the complaints on the reviews may have been instruction related. We will see how it compares- ran stock for 230k- will try this now.
Bought this kit as part of a larger overall DCR Pump conversion. Kit came quick, complete and works as advertised.
Very pleased with spelab. My horn is awesome and arrived in great shape. The heating element however I was not so lucky with. It arrived damaged. I reached out to spelabs support and they promptly sent me a new one free of charge. Installing that tonight. 5 stars
