Duramax Valve Cover
Is Your Duramax Valve Cover Leaking? How to Tell
If oil is running down the side of your 6.6L, the Duramax valve cover is one of the first places to look - and one of the easiest to misdiagnose. Oil travels down and rearward as you drive, so a leak that starts at the top of the engine usually presents itself somewhere else entirely.
Work through these checks before you order anything, in this order:
- Find the highest point where oil is wet. Wipe the area down, run the engine to temperature, then look again. Whatever is wet first is the source; everything below it is just runoff.
- Check the gasket line itself, not the bottom of the engine. Run a dry rag along the seam where the cover meets the head on both banks. Oil on the rag at the flange confirms the cover, not the rear main seal.
- Look at the exhaust manifold and turbo area. Oil that has made it onto hot components produces the burning smell or light smoke most owners notice first - and it rarely leaves a puddle underneath to point you back to the source.
- Inspect the PCV fittings and hoses on top of the cover. A loose or cracked fitting up there leaves the same film across the top of the engine as a flange leak.
A Duramax valve cover that has started seeping will not improve on its own. The question is whether a new gasket will actually fix it, and that depends on what has happened to the cover itself.
Why a Duramax Valve Cover Leak Comes Back After a New Gasket
This is the part that costs owners the most time and money. Most people reseal the cover first, and on a high-mileage or modified truck the leak returns within months. Three things cause that:
- The casting has lost its shape. Factory covers are cast aluminum. Under sustained heat and cylinder pressure they flex and distort, and once the flange is no longer flat, a fresh gasket is being asked to fill a gap that moves. It will not hold.
- Cast surfaces are not perfectly flat to begin with. Porosity and surface variation in a factory casting mean the mating face was never ideal, and it gets worse with every heat cycle.
- Blow-by pressure rises with power. A truck making more than stock pushes more crankcase pressure and more heat into the top end. That is exactly when a flexible cover gives up the seal.
So the honest test is this: if you have already replaced the gasket and the leak is back, the gasket was never the problem. The Duramax valve cover is the part that needs replacing.
What a Billet Duramax Valve Cover Changes
A billet cover is CNC-machined from a solid block of aluminum, and the two differences that matter are thickness and flatness - both measurable, neither cosmetic.
| Material | CNC-machined billet aluminum (solid block, not cast) |
| Profile thickness | 19.5mm - no flex under cylinder pressure or heat |
| Sealing face | Machined flat, replacing a surface that can warp and vary |
| PCV provision | Dual fittings - custom reroute or external catch can |
| Finish | Anodized, in black, red or silver |
| Fitment | 2004.5-2010 GM 6.6L Duramax - LLY, LBZ, LMM |
That thickness is what turns a recurring leak into a permanent fix: a rigid flange clamps evenly and stays clamped, so the gasket can do its job instead of compensating for a surface that keeps moving. Solid billet also pulls heat out of the valvetrain more effectively than porous cast material, which matters on an engine that works hard or makes more power than stock.
Crankcase Pressure: Route Your Duramax Valve Cover PCV Before You Buy
Every diesel passes some combustion gas into the crankcase, and that pressure has to be routed somewhere - on these engines, through the Duramax valve cover. Two things follow from that:
- Oil mist travels with the vapour. Sent back through the intake, it coats the turbo compressor wheel, intercooler, and piping, and gradually costs you efficiency.
- More boost means more blow-by. Once you start adding power, the factory routing has more to handle than it was designed for.
Your Duramax valve cover routing is your choice here: this one gives you dual fittings rather than a fixed factory path, so you can run a custom reroute or plumb into an external catch can and keep oil vapour out of the intake entirely. Decide which you want before the cover goes on - routing it once, during installation, is far easier than revisiting it afterwards.
The Shaved Duramax Valve Cover: Built for Lift Pump Trucks
Factory covers carry bracket standoffs for the factory fuel filter housing. This cover leaves them off, which is not a styling decision - it exists for trucks running an aftermarket lift pump such as FASS or AirDog. Those systems replace the factory filtration, so the housing comes off and the standoffs are left holding nothing while taking up room over the cover.
If a lift pump is already installed or planned, the shaved profile is the configuration that fits your build. If the truck still runs the complete factory fuel system, check what is currently mounted to your cover before ordering.
Which Duramax Valve Cover Fits: LLY, LBZ or LMM
Model year alone is not enough on these trucks, because engine codes overlap production years. Match the engine code, not just the year:
| Engine code | Model years | Notes |
| LLY | 2004.5-2006 | Earlier 6.6L; confirm before ordering |
| LBZ | 2006-2007 | Year overlaps LLY - verify the code |
| LMM | 2007.5-2010 | Later emissions equipment |
All three are covered on Chevrolet and GMC 2500HD and 3500HD trucks. The later LML engine (2011 onward) is not covered by this cover - it uses a different design. If you are unsure which engine you have, check the engine ID label or your VIN build sheet rather than relying on the model year.
Installing a Duramax Valve Cover
- Work on a cool engine and remove anything mounted to the cover, keeping hardware organised.
- Lift the old cover and clean the head surface thoroughly - leftover gasket material or oil film will compromise the new seal.
- Fit a new gasket. One that has already been compressed has taken a set and will not seal again.
- Torque in the factory sequence, working from the centre outward so the flange clamps evenly.
- Connect your PCV routing to the dual fittings before first start, and make sure no line is kinked or left open.
- Run the engine to full temperature, let it cool, then re-check the gasket line for seepage and re-check fasteners.
Four Checks Before You Order a Duramax Valve Cover
- Engine code. LLY, LBZ or LMM - not LML.
- Fuel system. Factory filter housing still in place, or deleted for a lift pump?
- PCV plan. Reroute or external catch can - decided before the cover goes on.
- Gasket and finish. Order a fresh Duramax valve cover gasket, and pick the anodized finish that suits the build.
Keep the Crankcase System Closed
Rerouting PCV or adding a catch can is common on modified trucks, but the crankcase ventilation system is part of the emissions equipment. Route crankcase gases to a sealed catch can rather than venting them to the atmosphere, and check your local requirements before changing the system on a truck that sees public roads.

Installed this on my 2012 F-150 5.0L using a LubeLocker gasket instead of RTV. Installation went smoothly, and so far everything is working great with no leaks.
One helpful note for other buyers: I couldn't find the recommended cover bolt torque specification in the documentation, so I contacted SPELAB support. Their technical team confirmed a specification of 25–30 N·m (approximately 18–22 ft-lbs). I torqued mine to 20 ft-lbs.
It would be helpful if SPELAB included this information in the installation instructions. Otherwise, very happy with the purchase so far!
The fuel line they sent with the intake horn did not fit properly and also there was a issue with the flare nut not reaching the threads
I have been having issues with the tune (hopefully not the tuner). I emailed customer service with my concerns and got a response within an hour. I didn’t even think to check my email that quick because “normal” customer service takes days. They responded both times in such a rapid manner I was not able to respond with the issues that fast. They have been great to deal with. I will continue to purchase from them because of that alone
I recently purchased the SPELAB grid heater delete plate kit and installed on my 2018 Ram 2500 with the 6.7 Cummins diesel engine
I Was not left disappointed with the ease of ordering and speed of service along with the completeness of the kit and High quality fit and finish !
I now have the piece of mind as well as the High performance that the grid heater deleate plate offers for my Ram 2500
Very Pleased with with customer service and the quality of the product
Thanks SPELAB

This kit is put together so well love the packaging it came in and how simple it is to assemble i did notice a slight drop in EGTs like it said it would and also no leaks what so ever. Only issue is not stickers
Got rid of my factory horn and went with this one for 93% more air flow and it looks sick
Great quality and fit Perfect
Great Product. Quality seems really good too.

As promised great product and perfect fit..Thank you SPELAB
i love how they look on my truck
Duramax Valve Cover FAQs
Find the highest point that is wet. Oil runs down and rearward as you drive, so a cover leak usually shows up lower on the engine. Wipe the area, run the engine to temperature, and look again - then run a dry rag along the seam where the cover meets the head. Oil on the rag at the flange confirms the Duramax valve cover rather than the rear main seal.
Because the casting has lost its shape. Factory covers are cast aluminum and distort under heat and cylinder pressure; once the flange is no longer flat, a new gasket has to fill a gap that keeps moving. Cast surfaces can also be porous and uneven. If a reseal did not hold, the cover itself needs replacing.
This cover fits the 2004.5-2010 GM 6.6L Duramax in LLY (2004.5-2006), LBZ (2006-2007) and LMM (2007.5-2010) form, on Chevrolet and GMC 2500HD and 3500HD trucks. Model years overlap between engine codes, so match the engine code rather than the year. The later LML engine is not covered.
Either works - the cover gives you dual fittings instead of a fixed factory path, so you can run a custom reroute or plumb into an external catch can. Routing it through a catch can keeps oil vapour out of the turbo and intercooler instead of feeding it back into the intake. Decide before installation so you only route it once.
It omits the factory bracket standoffs that hold the factory fuel filter housing. Trucks running an aftermarket lift pump such as FASS or AirDog remove that housing, so the standoffs hold nothing and only take up room. If a lift pump is installed or planned, the shaved Duramax valve cover is the right configuration; if the factory fuel system is intact, check what mounts to your cover first.
