Duramax CCV
Why Upgrade the Duramax CCV System?
The 6.6L Duramax diesel engine, used extensively in 2004.5–2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD trucks, is known for its durability and towing power. But whether you're running an LLY, LBZ, LMM, or a newer LML (2011–2016) or L5P (2017–2024) engine, all factory Duramax platforms share one common flaw: their CCV (Crankcase Ventilation) system.
The stock system recirculates oil vapors back into the intake tract for emissions compliance, but this often leads to oil buildup in the intercooler, carbon deposits on the turbo, dirty intake valves, and sensor contamination. These issues become even more severe under high mileage, heavy loads, or performance tuning.
That’s why more Duramax owners are switching to a SPELAB Duramax CCV reroute kit or CCV delete system—to stop oil vapor from entering the intake system, maintain airflow integrity, reduce maintenance, and extend the life of their engines.
Benefits of Upgrading the LML and L5P Duramax CCV Reroute
For owners of the 2011–2016 LML Duramax and the 2017–2024 L5P Duramax, the stock CCV filters (such as the oil separators used on LML engines) often become saturated or clogged around 60,000 to 80,000 miles. This leads to a dangerous rise in crankcase pressure, which can cause oil leaks, compromised turbo seals, and other costly issues.
By contrast, the SPELAB L5P CCV reroute kit uses either a catch can or vent-to-atmosphere system to redirect and isolate oil vapor—completely removing it from the intake path. With this upgrade, you get:
-
A cleaner intake manifold and intercooler
-
Stable internal engine pressure
-
No more costly CCV filter replacements
-
Improved throttle response and combustion efficiency
For any Duramax driver focused on longevity, towing stability, or tuned performance, this is a smart, preventative upgrade that pays off quickly.

Use the included billet plug or silicone cap to seal off the intake port.
-
Attach the supplied ventilation hose and route it either to a catch can or directly to atmosphere (depending on your setup).
-
Secure all lines with clamps and ensure the hose is routed away from hot or moving components.
-
Start the engine and inspect the system for leaks, abnormal pressure, or ventilation issues.
Thanks to its bolt-on design, this upgrade is accessible for most truck owners—even without professional mechanical experience.
Maintenance Tips & Long-Term Use
Once installed, the Duramax CCV reroute system requires minimal upkeep compared to stock CCV filters, which must be replaced regularly. To ensure consistent performance, follow these basic maintenance tips:
-
Inspect and drain your catch can (if equipped) every 3,000–5,000 miles to prevent overflow.
-
Check all hose connections periodically to ensure they're tight and free of wear or cracking.
-
Make sure the breather path remains unobstructed to avoid pressure build-up.
-
If you’re using an open vent system, consider adding a small breather filter to prevent dust intrusion during reverse airflow events.
This system is especially beneficial for trucks operating under heavy load, in extreme climates, or with performance tuning—providing a cleaner intake system and reducing long-term engine wear.
Legal Considerations for Duramax CCV Delete Kits
In many U.S. states—particularly California and other CARB-regulated areas—altering or removing emissions-related components such as the CCV (Crankcase Ventilation) system is not permitted for street-driven vehicles. This includes routing crankcase gases away from the intake system or venting to the atmosphere.
Important Notes:
-
Always verify your state's emissions laws before purchasing or installing a CCV PCV reroute delete kit.
-
These kits are not EPA- or CARB-certified, and using them on public roads may result in fines or failed inspections.
-
SPELAB designs these systems for race-only, off-road, and agricultural applications, where emissions compliance is not legally required.
By understanding the legal landscape and using the kit in the correct context, you can enjoy the full benefits of a Duramax CCV reroute system while avoiding unintended regulatory issues.
FAQ
Q1: What’s the difference between the LML and L5P Duramax CCV systems?
A: The LML (2011–2016) uses an integrated oil separator built into the valve cover, requiring a reroute kit to block off the factory vent and redirect blow-by. The L5P (2017–2024) features a more modular CCV system, making it easier to upgrade using SPELAB’s bolt-on reroute kit.
Q2: Do I need to tune my ECU after installing a SPELAB CCV reroute kit?
A: No. The SPELAB CCV PCV Reroute Delete Kit is fully bolt-on and does not require any ECU tuning or DTC suppression. Even when paired with a catch can, it won’t affect sensor readings or engine management functions.
Q3: Can the L5P CCV reroute kit work with the factory intake system?
A: Yes. SPELAB’s reroute kits are designed to be fully compatible with OEM intake setups and turbo piping. They include precision fittings and clamps to ensure a sealed and secure installation without altering the factory layout.
Q4: How often should I drain the catch can if installed?
A: We recommend checking and draining the catch can every 3,000–5,000 miles, depending on driving conditions, engine wear, and climate. Trucks under heavy loads or in hot environments may require more frequent checks.
Q5: Will this kind of CCV reroute modification affect emissions inspection or warranty?
A: In many states, modifying the CCV system is considered an emissions-related change and may cause the vehicle to fail inspection—especially in CARB-regulated areas like California. These kits are intended for off-road, agricultural, or competition use only. Warranty implications vary; check with your dealer before installing.

Excellent quality.
I have a 2017 Ram 2500 2wd and looking to make it last as long as possible. With extra fluid capacity and cooling fins, I felt that this is better than stock. The hardware that came with it looks great and appreciated because I was going to replace the old anyways. Even the gasket is heavy-duty and looks like it's reusable if needed. Not a thin felt like material but a thicker quality rubber. Shipping was like 4 days. I am pleased with my purchase and would highly recommend it.
Highly recommend clean, good quality, fast shipping. 100% haves my business is had my power coated
Everything went in and on very smoothly everything fit and as should only thing I will say is does not come with bolts for up pipe and the gaskets are decent but would upgrade to some mahle gaskets and get a set of ppe up pipe bolts other than that very solid affordable set of parts the coating on the up pipe will burn off due to heat but it does not affect performance of part or affect truck at all definitely recommend if your looking for performance parts while trying to save some money it definitely gave my Lly duramax the tone and power I was looking for!
I received a box with no grid heater delete got a hold of customer service and receive one in three days. Fantastic service.
Install was easy works great at a fraction of the price. Heat element started truck at 8 degrees the other day just like the original grid heater did.
Worth the money and 1/4 of the price 100% recommend them i run the pipe 1 my dad runs there newer style both are worth the money. And just put 1 on my father's in-law truck.
Installed on ford e350 super duty dana 70fit was perfect
Having trouble keeping clap rings on the hose and pipe they keep blowing off when boost pressure coming up.
Perfect fitment and function.
I have a 2005 ram with the 5.7 I had a 2018 challenger with duel coil packs so I got this valve cover to fit and used the mmx adapters and boom! Looks amazing. Only thing is the screws and lock washers are not good...torque specs will break the lock washers and I think one coil thread hole got stripped but other than that I got it too work. Thanks!
Install was easy as long as you take the fuel line off the manifold and reinstall it after bolting down the intake. It also helps having an intake heater since removing the grid heater. No more check engine lights after a cold start. The quality of Spelabs products are great. And the price point is even better.
combined it with the intake horn, new intercooler and pipe kit. added the valve cover. Seems to function well. instructions were adequate- could be better. I assume a few of the complaints on the reviews may have been instruction related. We will see how it compares- ran stock for 230k- will try this now.
Bought this kit as part of a larger overall DCR Pump conversion. Kit came quick, complete and works as advertised.
Very pleased with spelab. My horn is awesome and arrived in great shape. The heating element however I was not so lucky with. It arrived damaged. I reached out to spelabs support and they promptly sent me a new one free of charge. Installing that tonight. 5 stars
