Powerstroke Air Intake Kit FAQS

Yes. Cold air intakes lower intake air temperature (IAT) by 10–15°F and add up to 10 HP on the 6.0L and 6.7L Powerstroke when combined with a tune. The biggest gains come from eliminating the restrictive factory airbox. On the 7.3L, the improvement is more incremental—mainly better throttle response and spool. For maximum gains, pair the intake with an intercooler pipe upgrade and delete tune.

A cold air intake noticeably changes the turbo inlet sound—you'll hear a stronger whoosh and whistle under boost. It does not make the truck drone or crackle like an exhaust delete would. If you want the loudest possible sound, an intake alone won't deliver that. A straight-pipe exhaust is the real audio upgrade; the intake is primarily a performance and response upgrade.

The heat shield version reflects radiant engine bay heat away from the filter, keeping intake air cooler under heavy loads. On the 6.4L Powerstroke—known for high under-hood temperatures—this difference is most noticeable. Standard intakes work fine for highway driving; the heat shield version is worth it for trucks doing sustained towing, off-road, or hot-climate driving.

All SPELAB Powerstroke intakes are bolt-on with no welding or cutting required. The kit includes model-specific silicone couplers, stainless T-bolt clamps, and a powder-coated box that mounts to the factory location. Install time is 30–60 minutes with basic hand tools. Detailed step-by-step videos are available for each model year on the SPELAB YouTube channel.

SPELAB offers direct-fit cold air intakes for every Powerstroke generation: 1999–2003 7.3L, 2003–2007 6.0L, 2008–2010 6.4L, 2011–2016 6.7L, and 2017–2019 6.7L. The 4" intake for 2003–2007 6.0L handles the highest airflow demand. Always confirm your engine displacement and year range before ordering—some model years overlap in the same bracket.
