Runner Design & Performance

Individual primary runners feed a shared collector on each engine bank. The runner layout changes how the engine-side exhaust is routed compared with a compact cast manifold; the effect on power, torque and sound depends on the engine combination and complete exhaust.

No fixed horsepower or torque increase is promised. An exhaust change should be considered alongside the engine’s cylinder heads, camshaft, fuel delivery and intended operating range, not as a guaranteed cure for poor running.

Chevrolet Chassis Applications

These are chassis applications for a compatible big-block Chevrolet V8 installation. They do not mean that every engine displacement was factory available in every year, or that every swapped engine will clear the chassis. Confirm the actual heads, engine position and exhaust joints using the Installation checks.

A shared Chevrolet or GMC badge does not extend the table to every car or truck. For 427 or 502 builds, obtain an engine-and-chassis assessment before ordering rather than treating displacement alone as a fitment confirmation.

Before You Order & Install

• Engine and cylinder heads: identify the installed big-block version and compare exhaust ports, flange bolt locations and plug access. Changed deck height or aftermarket heads can alter the route; do not infer fitment for a small-block or LS engine.
• Mounts and steering: verify engine mounts and frame stands, steering-box and shaft clearance, and the actual engine position. Do not force or alter safety-critical steering parts to make a header clear.
• Surrounding components: trial-check the starter, oil filter, clutch or shift linkage, accessory brackets and nearby wiring. Lowered suspension or changed mounts also require a collector-to-ground clearance assessment.
• Dimensions and downstream pipes: compare the 2.85-inch outlet specification and actual mating faces with the retained exhaust. Confirm measurement references, connector route and any required adapters or fabrication before starting.
• Seals and required equipment: inspect the head threads, mating surfaces, brackets and retained fasteners. Verify any sensor or emissions connections required by the installed engine; connector pipes are not confirmation of sensor provisions.
• Permitted use: check the requirements for the vehicle, engine and intended use. No emissions certification or unrestricted public-road approval is claimed; an older chassis is not an automatic exemption.

Will This Exhaust Change Require Tuning?

A carbureted engine without an ECU has no ECU calibration to change, but mixture and ignition settings should be evaluated for the completed combination. EFI or electronically managed swaps require a separate calibration assessment based on sensor operation and other modifications. Correct leaks and mechanical mismatches first; software cannot fix a misaligned flange or missing connection.

Installation Overview

This is a general installation overview for a compatible big-block Chevrolet project, not a model-specific manual. Follow the service procedures for the actual engine and chassis, and complete the fitment and tuning checks above. Professional installation is recommended.

1. Verify the installed combination. Identify the engine, heads, mounts and transmission controls, then lay out the pair of headers and joining parts. Complete the configuration and clearance checks above.
2. Cool and support the vehicle. Allow the engine and exhaust to cool fully. Follow the vehicle’s lifting procedure and use a suitable lift or rated stands; never rely on a jack alone.
3. Remove the existing assembly. Support the downstream pipes and document retained connections. Remove the relevant manifolds or headers using the service procedure for the installed engine, protecting wiring and adjacent parts.
4. Prepare the mating surfaces. Inspect the head faces, threads and exhaust joints. Remove old gasket material carefully, renew damaged hardware and select suitable seals for each connection.
5. Trial-fit both sides. Start the fasteners by hand and check the steering, starter, linkage, plug access and collector clearances. Align the supplied connectors with the downstream pipe route without loading the headers.
6. Complete the connections. Finish the planned downstream joints and tighten in the sequence and to the requirements for the heads and hardware. Restore retained brackets and required equipment; secure wiring clear of heat and moving parts.
7. Check operation and sealing. Run the engine in a well-ventilated area and inspect for leaks, contact and abnormal running. After cooling, inspect the joints again and follow any prescribed fastener recheck; evaluate mixture, ignition or calibration as appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will any 396, 402, 427, 454 or 502 engine fit these headers?

No. Displacement alone does not establish matching heads, engine position or chassis clearance. Use the application table and assess the installed combination; a 427 or 502 build needs a specific engine-and-chassis check.

Do I need particular engine mounts or frame stands?

The installed mounts must position the engine so the headers clear the chassis and steering. Compare your actual mounts and engine location before ordering. No universal mount or frame-stand combination is promised for every application.

Will the steering, clutch linkage and starter clear?

Those parts must be checked together on the car. Steering-box size, linkage, starter dimensions and engine position can change available space. A matching year and model alone does not settle those clearances.

Does the 2.85-inch outlet guarantee a direct connection to my pipes?

No. The mating flange, measurement reference, connector position and pipe route must also match. Establish any adapter or fabrication requirement before installation.

Are the collectors suitable for a lowered car?

Ground clearance must be measured on the actual suspension and engine-mount combination. This page does not promise a specific clearance or scrape-free result for a lowered vehicle.

Do the headers guarantee an extra 10–15 horsepower?

No. No product-specific test is provided here to support a fixed gain. Results depend on the engine and complete exhaust setup, including calibration where applicable.
