An air-to-air intercooler, also called a charge-air cooler, is a heat exchanger installed between the turbocharger and the engine’s intake side. Hot compressed air from the turbo passes through the intercooler core, while outside air flowing across the aluminum fins carries heat away. Cooler, denser charge air helps a turbo diesel truck maintain more consistent airflow and performance during towing, long grades, hot-weather driving, and other high-load conditions.
Front-mount describes the intercooler’s location near the front cooling stack, where road speed and engine-fan airflow can pass through the core. Air-to-air describes the cooling method: heat moves directly from the compressed charge air to outside airflow.
Unlike an air-to-water intercooler, an air-to-air system does not use a separate coolant pump, reservoir, or liquid cooling circuit. It is also different from the radiator: the radiator cools engine coolant, while the intercooler cools pressurized intake air.
Both designs in this collection cool charge air with outside airflow, but they differ in construction, weight, and intended workload.
A bar-and-plate intercooler uses a heavier core with greater thermal mass. It is generally better matched to trucks that tow heavy trailers, climb long grades, operate in high ambient temperatures, or run increased boost and fueling. The tradeoff is additional weight in the front cooling stack.
A tube-fin intercooler uses a lighter core and is often a practical choice for stock or lightly modified daily drivers. It is well suited to owners replacing a worn, damaged, or leaking factory intercooler without automatically moving to the heaviest-duty construction available.

It can be worthwhile when the factory intercooler is leaking, damaged, heavily corroded, externally blocked, or no longer controlling charge-air temperature consistently. A stock daily driver may only need a practical tube-fin replacement, while the added thermal capacity of a heavier bar-and-plate core is generally more useful for frequent towing, hot climates, or sustained-load driving.
An intercooler does not create a guaranteed horsepower increase by itself. Its main job is to manage charge-air temperature and reduce heat soak. On a properly matched setup, that can help the engine maintain more consistent airflow and performance during towing, repeated acceleration, long grades, and other sustained-load conditions.
An oversized or poorly designed intercooler can add unnecessary internal volume or airflow restriction. A well-matched, application-specific intercooler should balance core size, airflow, cooling capacity, and pressure drop. Start with a visual inspection for oil-stained leak points, split boots, loose clamps, cracked pipes, damaged welds, and leaking intercooler end tanks. A controlled charge-air pressure test or smoke test can help isolate the actual leak. Reduced power or slow boost response alone is not enough to confirm that the intercooler core has failed.

Loved the kit good fit and finish and easy to install. The little extraction tool helped immensely for that pesky bolt on the back. I purchased this kit because of the good reviews and I seen one on a 2018 Chevy Duramax that had been fully deleted and was asking the owner questions about the kit and where he bought it, he said SPELAB it was well worth the money and made it easier to put oil in the truck and yes does make it a lot easier to fill the engine with oil and if the old plastic ccv system cracks do to heat and and age it pushes oil on the engine and could cause a fire so it was well worth the money and piece of mind. So if you are looking for a CCV reroute kit I highly recommend this kit.
do not treat head studs like ordinary bolts. Clean and chase every block thread, verify hole depth and any fluid passages, then apply the supplied assembly lubricant only where specified—especially on nut and washer contact surfaces.
Took the gamble on these. Ive installed arp studs for customers and I did these in my truck. Few thousand miles now and no issues. I can’t say they are better than arp but I can say they are just as good for just half of the price.

Good quality coolant tank with fair price!
First off I purchased this intake horn/w grid heater relocation because of the price and the heating element came as a kit. I am not a truck mechanic and this part wasn't very easy for me to swap out. The parts were shipped extremely fast and well packaged this intake horn was installed in conjunction with Spelab's rid heater delete kit. I was also nervous to do this swap myself because I haven't messed with any of these parts previously. But Praise God I was able to take everything apart and install the new parts without any issues. The videos were alright also looked up a few videos on YouTube to get a better idea of what I was up against before I started. Overall Spelab has been a great experience, all the parts were very nice looking and well made. I will definitely do business with Spelab in the future. I am considering doing the head stud kit.
