SPELAB Intercooler Overview
In turbocharged or supercharged engines, the intercooler plays a vital role by reducing intake air temperatures and increasing air density. Cooler air means more oxygen, which enables more efficient combustion, better performance, and reduced engine knock.
SPELAB intercoolers primarily utilize the air to air intercooler system, where ambient airflow cools down the compressed intake air before it enters the combustion chamber. This method is highly reliable, simpler in design, and ideal for most high-performance and diesel truck applications.
Within the SPELAB lineup, users can choose between tube-and-fin or the more durable bar-and-plate intercooler designs. The bar-and-plate structure offers superior strength and thermal capacity, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications such as the 2019 RAM 2500 6.7L Cummins diesel engine, where consistent cooling under load is critical.
On the other hand, tube-and-fin intercoolers are lightweight and provide excellent transient heat dissipation—perfect for daily drivers like the 2017 Ford Mustang EcoBoost 2.3T that prioritize turbo responsiveness and lightweight handling.
All SPELAB intercoolers are tested for real-world durability and performance, making them a smart choice for any turbo intercooler upgrade.
Intercooler Types Explained: Air to Air vs Water to Air
There are two main types of intercoolers available today: air to air intercoolers and water to air intercoolers. Each has its advantages depending on your performance goals and driving conditions.
Air to air intercoolers, which are the backbone of most SPELAB intercoolers, rely on the flow of outside air to cool down the compressed intake charge. This system is simple, reliable, and very effective for the majority of turbocharged vehicles. For heavy-duty applications like the 2021 Ford F-250 6.7L Powerstroke, SPELAB’s bar-and-plate air to air intercooler delivers improved intake temp control, reduced turbo lag, and enhanced towing stability.
In contrast, water to air intercoolers use a liquid-cooled system that transfers heat through a secondary cooling loop. While they provide rapid cooling in tight engine bays or race setups, they are more complex and can require frequent maintenance.
When choosing between the two, it’s essential to evaluate your vehicle layout, daily usage, and performance goals. SPELAB has optimized the air to air intercooler design to meet the cooling needs of most diesel trucks and turbo cars without compromising on installation ease or durability.
Why Choose SPELAB Intercooler? Upgraded Design for Real Gains
Compared to OEM units, SPELAB intercoolers offer a significant leap in performance thanks to superior construction and smart airflow design. From the bar-and-plate core to the optimized end tanks, every element is engineered for better cooling and higher boost support.
SPELAB’s bar-and-plate construction delivers increased thermal mass and superior pressure tolerance over tube-and-fin designs. This makes it ideal for high-boost applications like the 6.0 Powerstroke turbo diesel, where prolonged heavy loads are common.
Additionally, the cast aluminum end tanks are designed to maximize strength while reducing airflow turbulence. With an internal hot-side air diverter, airflow is distributed more evenly across the core, minimizing hot spots and boosting cooling efficiency—critical for any turbo intercooler setup.
Another key advantage is reduced pressure drop, meaning the intercooler allows air to pass with less resistance. This leads to quicker spool-up, better throttle response, and less strain on the turbo.
The results speak for themselves. In a 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500HD 6.6L Duramax, the upgraded SPELAB intercooler reduced intake temps by over 20% and added 20 lb-ft of torque during dyno testing—clear proof of real-world performance improvements.

SPELAB Intercooler Fitment for Diesel Trucks & Turbocharged Cars
SPELAB intercoolers are engineered to fit a wide range of diesel trucks and performance cars, including popular engines from Ford, RAM, and Chevy. With bolt-on compatibility and optimized mounting designs, upgrading to a SPELAB unit is simple—and performance gains are immediate.
Take the 2020 Ford F-350 Super Duty 6.7L Powerstroke for example. Under heavy towing or long-distance highway driving, the OEM tube-and-fin intercooler struggles with heat soak. By switching to a SPELAB bar-and-plate intercooler, users experience lower intake temperatures, smoother torque delivery, and improved transmission behavior.
On Chevy Duramax trucks, like the 2016 Silverado 2500HD 6.6L Duramax, real-world dyno testing shows gains of 12 horsepower and 20 lb-ft of torque, with improved boost stability and reduced turbo lag after installing a SPELAB intercooler.
For performance car owners, SPELAB also offers a range of car intercoolers, including front mount intercoolers tailored for vehicles like the Mustang EcoBoost 2.3T and Subaru WRX STI. These provide sharper throttle response and enhanced boost control for daily driving or weekend track use.
Each SPELAB intercooler is vehicle-specific, with custom brackets, silicone couplers, and detailed install guides—delivering a true plug-and-play experience for any enthusiast or professional installer.
Comparing Intercooler Core Designs – Performance vs Durability
When choosing an intercooler, it's important to understand the differences between the two main core types: tube-and-fin and bar-and-plate. Both are available in the SPELAB intercooler lineup, and each has its strengths depending on your driving needs.
The tube-and-fin design is lightweight and offers excellent heat dissipation for short bursts of power and everyday driving. It uses thin aluminum tubes with attached cooling fins to quickly transfer heat to the surrounding air. This design is perfect for turbocharged gas vehicles like the 2017 Ford Mustang EcoBoost, where rapid airflow and reduced weight are key priorities.
On the other hand, the bar-and-plate design is more rugged and built for high-pressure applications. It uses stacked aluminum bars and plates, TIG-welded for strength and durability. This structure retains more thermal energy and withstands high-boost environments—ideal for diesel applications like the 6.0 Powerstroke intercooler, especially in heavy-duty towing or modified builds.
SPELAB offers both core types to match your budget and driving style. A simple side-by-side comparison can help you decide whether you need lightweight responsiveness or maximum durability.
But once you’ve chosen the right core structure, the next crucial question is: does your vehicle support a front-mounted layout—and is that the most effective option for your performance goals?
Is a Front Mount Intercooler Right for Your Vehicle?
A front mount intercooler positions the cooling unit at the front of the vehicle, just behind the grille, where airflow is most abundant. This setup is ideal for reducing intake air temperatures and improving turbo efficiency, making it a popular choice for car intercooler upgrades.
SPELAB’s lineup includes front mount options for performance cars like the Mustang EcoBoost 2.3T and the Subaru WRX STI 2.5L Turbo. Available in both lightweight tube-and-fin and durable bar-and-plate constructions, these intercoolers feature oversized cores that maximize cooling potential while adding a bold, aggressive look to your engine bay.
The front-mounted design increases cooling surface area and airflow exposure, especially during hard acceleration, track use, or mountain driving. With SPELAB’s optimized turbo intercooler flow channels, users experience reduced pressure drop, faster boost response, and improved throttle feel.
Beyond function, front mount intercoolers are a favorite among tuners for their visual appeal. Whether finished in stealth black or raw aluminum, they send a clear message: this car is built for performance.
Maximize Your Build with Cold Air Intake, EGR/DPF Delete, and CCV Upgrades
While an intercooler upgrade alone can deliver cooler, denser air to your engine, pairing it with other SPELAB performance mods creates a compound effect that unlocks your vehicle’s full potential. SPELAB offers a complete ecosystem for diesel engines, including cold air intakes, EGR delete kits, DPF delete pipes, and CCV reroute systems.
For example, on a 2017 RAM 2500 6.7L Cummins, installing a SPELAB turbo intercooler along with a cold air intake significantly increases airflow and improves turbo response, delivering stronger low-end torque and smoother throttle transitions.
When combined with EGR and DPF deletes, the reduction in exhaust gas recirculation and backpressure helps keep the intercooler cleaner and improves combustion efficiency. The CCV reroute system further ensures that oil vapors are kept out of the intake track, preserving intercooler and throttle body cleanliness over time.
This multi-mod synergy results in better horsepower, torque, and engine reliability—especially under heavy towing, high-altitude driving, or aggressive tuning. For diesel enthusiasts, these coordinated upgrades make SPELAB the go-to brand for complete performance solutions.
In addition to intercoolers, spelab also sells air intake, intercooler pipe, intercooler kit, wheel spacers and other auto accessories.

FAQ
Q1: How much boost pressure can a SPELAB intercooler handle?
A: SPELAB turbo intercoolers, especially the bar-and-plate models, are tested up to 40 psi, making them ideal for tuned or heavily loaded engines. This prevents the expansion or cracking seen in some OEM intercoolers under high boost.
Q2: Does an intercooler affect fuel economy?
A: Actually, it can improve it. By lowering intake temps, the intercooler enhances combustion efficiency. That means less throttle is needed to achieve the same power—especially useful in highway cruising or towing situations.
Q3: Do intercoolers require cleaning or maintenance?
A: Yes. While passive, intercoolers should be inspected annually or every 15,000 km. Dirt, bugs, or oil vapor can reduce cooling efficiency—particularly on front mount intercoolers. Low-pressure air or intercooler-safe cleaners are recommended.
Q4: How does SPELAB stand out from other brands?
A: SPELAB integrates unique features like hot-side air diverters and cast aluminum end tanks, which ensure smooth airflow and better heat transfer. Plus, every intercooler comes with a lifetime warranty, giving peace of mind for long-term builds.
Q5: Is bigger always better when it comes to intercoolers?
A: Not necessarily. Oversized cores can create higher pressure drop and hurt low-end boost response. SPELAB intercoolers are engineered per engine—matching core size to engine displacement, turbo output, and airflow demand for optimal balance.

Excellent quality.
I have a 2017 Ram 2500 2wd and looking to make it last as long as possible. With extra fluid capacity and cooling fins, I felt that this is better than stock. The hardware that came with it looks great and appreciated because I was going to replace the old anyways. Even the gasket is heavy-duty and looks like it's reusable if needed. Not a thin felt like material but a thicker quality rubber. Shipping was like 4 days. I am pleased with my purchase and would highly recommend it.
Highly recommend clean, good quality, fast shipping. 100% haves my business is had my power coated
Everything went in and on very smoothly everything fit and as should only thing I will say is does not come with bolts for up pipe and the gaskets are decent but would upgrade to some mahle gaskets and get a set of ppe up pipe bolts other than that very solid affordable set of parts the coating on the up pipe will burn off due to heat but it does not affect performance of part or affect truck at all definitely recommend if your looking for performance parts while trying to save some money it definitely gave my Lly duramax the tone and power I was looking for!
I received a box with no grid heater delete got a hold of customer service and receive one in three days. Fantastic service.
Install was easy works great at a fraction of the price. Heat element started truck at 8 degrees the other day just like the original grid heater did.
Worth the money and 1/4 of the price 100% recommend them i run the pipe 1 my dad runs there newer style both are worth the money. And just put 1 on my father's in-law truck.
Installed on ford e350 super duty dana 70fit was perfect
Having trouble keeping clap rings on the hose and pipe they keep blowing off when boost pressure coming up.
Perfect fitment and function.
I have a 2005 ram with the 5.7 I had a 2018 challenger with duel coil packs so I got this valve cover to fit and used the mmx adapters and boom! Looks amazing. Only thing is the screws and lock washers are not good...torque specs will break the lock washers and I think one coil thread hole got stripped but other than that I got it too work. Thanks!
Install was easy as long as you take the fuel line off the manifold and reinstall it after bolting down the intake. It also helps having an intake heater since removing the grid heater. No more check engine lights after a cold start. The quality of Spelabs products are great. And the price point is even better.
combined it with the intake horn, new intercooler and pipe kit. added the valve cover. Seems to function well. instructions were adequate- could be better. I assume a few of the complaints on the reviews may have been instruction related. We will see how it compares- ran stock for 230k- will try this now.
Bought this kit as part of a larger overall DCR Pump conversion. Kit came quick, complete and works as advertised.
Very pleased with spelab. My horn is awesome and arrived in great shape. The heating element however I was not so lucky with. It arrived damaged. I reached out to spelabs support and they promptly sent me a new one free of charge. Installing that tonight. 5 stars
