Collection: Duramax DPF Delete Pipe
1. What is a Duramax L5P DPF Delete Pipe and How Does It Work?
The Duramax DPF delete pipe is a high-performance exhaust upgrade specifically designed for the 6.6L Duramax engine. Its main purpose is to replace the factory Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), which is built to trap soot and particulate matter in diesel exhaust. While the DPF serves an environmental function, it also restricts exhaust flow, limiting horsepower and fuel efficiency. By installing SPELAB’s L5P delete pipes, you can effectively bypass the DPF system, allowing for smoother exhaust flow, improved throttle response, and noticeable power gains.
For example, on the 2017 L5P 6.6L Duramax Chevrolet GMC and 2024 L5P 6.6L Duramax Sierra 2500 HD, a DPF delete can unlock an additional 20–30 horsepower and improve fuel economy by 5%–10%. SPELAB offers various configurations like DPF-back pips, turbo-back DPF delete pipe, and downpipe-back kits to match different driving needs and performance goals.
Owners of older models like the 2011–2016 LML Duramax or 2001–2007 LBZ, LLY, LB7 6.6L Chevy/GMC can also benefit from a DPF delete, especially for off-road use, heavy towing, or driving in high-altitude environments.
2. Types of Duramax DPF Delete Pipe Products & Their Benefits
SPELAB offers a complete lineup of Duramax DPF delete pipe kits, each designed to match specific performance goals and vehicle setups. Here's a detailed breakdown of each type, how it works, and what kind of results you can expect:
2.1 DPF-Back kits
-
What it does: Replaces the exhaust section after the DPF while keeping the stock turbo and mid-pipe.
-
Performance gain: Adds around 10–15 HP, improves exhaust tone, great for daily driving and light mods.
-
Best for: Light-duty diesels like the 2016 2.8L Duramax GM and 2019 LWN 2.8L Duramax Chevy.
2.2 Downpipe-Back Pipes
-
What it does: Replaces everything from the downpipe to the tailpipe, allowing for better exhaust flow.
-
Performance gain: Adds 15–25 HP, improves fuel efficiency by 5%–10%, and reduces EGTs by about 150°F.
-
Best for: Mid-level performance upgrades, such as 2011–2016 LML 6.6L Duramax Silverado 2500HD owners.
2.3 Turbo-Back DPF Delete Pipes
-
What it does: Full system replacement from the turbocharger outlet to the rear of the truck.
-
Performance gain: Up to 30–35 HP, stronger torque response, lower backpressure—ideal for towing and off-road builds.
-
Best for: Older platforms like the 2001–2007 LBZ, LLY, LB7 6.6L Duramax Chevy/GMC.
2.4 DPF-Back Dual Pipes
-
What it does: Offers dual exhaust outlets for improved flow and a bold, aggressive look.
-
Performance gain: Similar to standard DPF-back kits, but with a deeper exhaust note and sportier styling.
-
Best for: Style-focused drivers who want performance and presence.
2.5 DP-Back + EGR Delete + Tuner Combo Kits
-
What it does: Full emissions delete, including DPF and EGR, paired with a tuner to recalibrate your ECM.
-
Performance gain: The most complete option—adds 40+ HP, removes carbon buildup issues from EGR systems.
-
Best for: Off-roaders, heavy haulers, and performance enthusiasts upgrading L5P delete pipes on 2017–2024 Duramax platforms.
2.6 Exhaust Tips ( 4", 5")
-
What it does: Adds a custom look and enhances the exhaust tone.
-
Performance gain: No direct power gain, but pairs well with any downpipe-back or turbo-back system for a complete upgrade.
-
Best for: Finishing off your build with style.
3. L5P Delete Pipe Pros & Cons: Is It Right for Your 2017–2024 Duramax?
If you own a 2017–2024 L5P 6.6L Duramax—whether it's a GMC Sierra 2500HD, Silverado 3500HD, or anything in between—you’ve likely heard about the performance gains from installing an l5p duramax exhaust. But what exactly do you gain, and what should you consider before making the move?
3.1 Benefits of L5P Delete Pipes
-
Massive Power Boost
With a full L5P delete pipe and tuner setup, you can unlock +35–45 HP and significant torque increases—perfect for towing, hauling, or aggressive off-roading. -
Improved Fuel Efficiency
Expect to gain up to 10% better fuel economy, especially when paired with a downpipe-back or turbo-back system. -
Lower EGTs, Longer Engine Life
Removing the DPF and EGR lowers Exhaust Gas Temps by up to 200°F, protecting your turbo and engine over the long haul. -
Better Sound & Flow
A 4 inch or 5 inch L5P exhaust pipe delivers a deeper, cleaner, and more aggressive diesel rumble. It also frees up backpressure for smoother acceleration. -
Simplified Maintenance
Without a DPF or EGR, you won’t have to deal with clogging, regen cycles, or CEL warnings due to emissions system failures.
3.2 Things to Consider Before Deleting Your L5P
-
Not Street Legal (In Most States)
L5P delete pipes are intended for off-road or race use only. Deleting emissions components can violate local regulations. -
Requires a Tuner
A delete pipe setup must be paired with a compatible ECM tuner to function properly and avoid dash lights or limp mode. -
Potential Warranty Voids
Once deleted, your vehicle may no longer qualify for OEM powertrain warranty coverage.
4. Which Duramax DPF Delete Pipe Setup is Right for You?
Driver Profile | Recommended Setup | Why It Works |
---|---|---|
Everyday Driver | DPF-Back Kit + 4" Tip | Clean look, subtle sound, minor gains without full delete |
Weekend Off-Roader | Downpipe-Back + EGR Delete | Better airflow and reduced temps for rugged terrain |
Towing Enthusiast | Turbo-Back + Tuner | Maximum torque and cooling for loaded trailers |
Performance Modder | Full L5P Delete Pipe Combo + Tuner | Unlocks full engine potential, ideal for 2017–2024 L5P |
Diesel Show Truck Owner | DPF-Back Dual Exit + 5" Tip | Aggressive styling with solid flow improvement |

6. Best Tuners for Duramax DPF Delete Systems
-
6.1 2017–2023 L5P Duramax
For L5P models, traditional tuners like Mini Maxx or EFI Live won't work directly due to locked ECMs. To tune these trucks, you'll need a ECM Unlock Kit, which enables access to the ECU for custom tuning. Once unlocked, you can apply full DPF/EGR/DEF deletes for duramax using custom files. This setup is ideal for off-road use, towing builds, or full performance upgrades.
-
6.2 2015.5–2016 LML Duramax
These late LML models are fully compatible with the Mini Maxx V2, which offers a plug-and-play experience with preloaded race tunes. Alternatively, if you want custom tuning control, the EFI Live AutoCal V3 is also supported and allows for multiple power levels.
-
6.3 2011–2015 LML Duramax
For earlier LML trucks, you can use either the Mini Maxx V2 or Mini Maxx V1 (limited to 2011–2014). The V2 is preferred for broader support, while the V1 is more affordable if your truck falls within the correct year range. Both support DPF and EGR delete. If you want a fully custom tuning solution, EFI Live AutoCal V3 is also a solid choice.
-
6.4 2007.5–2010 LMM Duramax
This generation gives you the most flexibility. You can run Mini Maxx V2, Mini Maxx V1, or EFI Live V3. All three tuners fully support GMC DPF removal, EGR delete, and multi-mode tuning. Many users pair this with a 4 inch or 5 inch exhaust pipe for added power and sound.
-
6.5 2006–2007 LBZ Duramax
These models are not equipped with a DPF from the factory, but tuning can still offer major performance gains. The EFI Live AutoCal V3 is the go-to solution here, offering full access to fuel, boost, and turbo parameters.
-
6.6 2004–2005 LLY Duramax
Just like the LBZ, the EFI Live AutoCal V3 is the recommended tuner. It's ideal for users looking to fine-tune fuel delivery, throttle response, and turbo boost on their LLY Duramax build.
-
6.7 2001–2004 LB7 Duramax
The earliest generation of 6.6L Duramax, the LB7 doesn’t have emissions systems like DPF or EGR, but benefits greatly from tuning. The EFI Live V3 gives you total control over injection timing, turbo control, and throttle calibration.

Start from the downpipe and work your way back.
-
Align and connect the 4 inch or 5 inch exhaust pipe sections.
-
Use band clamps or weld for a more permanent setup. Install hangers and tips last.
Step 4: Tuner Setup (If Included)
-
Plug your tuner into the OBD2 port and follow on-screen steps.
-
Select the calibration designed for your L5P Duramax exhaust delete kit.
Step 5: Final Check
-
Start the engine and check for leaks. Listen for smooth flow and verify tip alignment.
-
Test drive and monitor for improved spool time and deeper tone.

9. FAQ: L5P Delete Pipes & Duramax Exhaust Systems
Q1: Is an L5P delete pipe legal for road use?
A: No. L5P delete pipes and all Duramax DPF delete kits are intended for off-road or competition use only. Deleting emissions equipment may violate federal or state laws and could void your vehicle’s warranty.
Q2: What size exhaust pipe should I get—4 inch or 5 inch?
A: A 4 inch exhaust pipe is typically quieter and offers a good balance between flow and sound for daily driving. A 5 inch exhaust pipe provides maximum flow and a louder, deeper tone, ideal for show builds or off-road trucks.
⚙️ Q3: Will this kit fit my 2016 or older Duramax?
A: Yes, we offer delete systems for multiple generations:
-
06 Duramax exhaust kits (LBZ/LLY/LB7)
-
LMM exhaust kits (2011–2016 models)
-
As well as full GMC DPF removal packages for L5P (2017–2024)
Always check your engine code and model year before purchasing.
Q4: What’s included in a Duramax DPF delete kit?
A: Our complete kits include:
-
Downpipe-back or turbo-back pipes
-
Hardware, clamps, and hangers
-
Optional exhaust muffler (on select kits)
-
Illustrated installation instructions
-
Access to video tutorials via QR code
-
Tuner (if purchased in a combo)
Q5: How long does installation take?
A: On average:
-
DPF-back: 1.5–2 hours
-
Downpipe-back: 2–3 hours
-
Turbo-back with tuner: 3–4 hours
You’ll need basic tools and a safe workspace. Our support team is available if you need help.
Q6: Will I need a tuner?
A: Yes, if you're doing a full Duramax exhaust delete (especially with EGR delete), a tuner is required to prevent check engine lights and restore optimal performance.

Awesome people and products an I will be using yall on all my builds I got three more trucks to do maybe put some instructions in for none mechanical people would be very helpful I bin working on disel hevy equipment for over 30 years I know where everything gos an how it works just put 2016 engine in 2012 truck just had few changes but all good

Quality product, carefully packed and quickly shipped. Very happy customer here.

I was surprised when I removed the DPF/SCR and replaced it with a straight pipe with a high flow muffler… and it was quiet. But I don’t have to worry about getting pulled over. Easy install, very straightforward. Would buy again. Shipped fast! But if you want louder pipes, consider the straight pipe.

Great product, well made, fit is perfect. Hardware sent is a little short in my opinion so I reused factory hardware. Turned out great.

Great product and comes with everything you need.

In my opinion best bang for your buck and very trustworthy company and had in stock

Great kit but I like the black bracket for the water pipe and exhaust temp sensor.

The installation is easy and smooth.

They make the parts affordable thank the lord, got the website from my mechanic but he never tried them yet- I gave them a shot now I get it

I’ve bought this part two times now for different trucks and it works great highly recommend!

The exhaust sounds amazing. And very easy to install. Only complaint would be packaging. UPS destroys the box when delivered, if there were better Cushioning within the box, less likely to be damaged.

Great Fitment and Fast shipping. Highly Recommend!

The expansion tank fit excellent and looks great. Functions as it should.

All parts arrived promptly and packed well. Installation was smooth and trouble free except for the tube style heater which would not thread into the new intake elbow. The provided plug threaded in fine so will have to revisit that issue before winter.

Overall I was very impressed. Pricing was great, everything I needed was provided. Quality of the parts was good. I would definitely recommend this package when compared to others.
