Differential Cover
Find the Right Differential Cover by Vehicle, Year, and Axle
Most truck, SUV, and Jeep owners start by searching for a differential cover by vehicle and model year. That is the right starting point, but the final fit must be confirmed by axle model, bolt count, front or rear position, and cover shape. SPELAB differential covers include axle-specific options for Ford, GM, Ram, Jeep, Dana, AAM, Chrysler, and other truck or off-road platforms.
Choose a Differential Cover by Vehicle and Year
Start with your vehicle platform below, then compare your factory cover, bolt count, axle tag, and front or rear position before checkout.
| Vehicle Platform | Common Years | Common Axle / Cover Type | Buyer Check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford F-150 | 1997–2017 and selected 2015–2026 applications | Ford 9.75, Ford 8.8, 12-bolt rear axle options | Confirm rear axle size, bolt count, and whether your truck uses 8.8 or 9.75-style fitment. |
| Ford F-250 / F-350 Super Duty | 1985–2024 and selected late-model applications | Ford 10.25 / 10.5, Dana M275, Dana M235, Dana 50 / 60 / 70 options | Confirm front or rear axle, Super Duty year range, axle tag, and bolt pattern. |
| Ram 2500 / 3500 | 2003–2024 selected applications | AAM 9.25, AAM 11.5 / 11.8 / 12, Dana 80 options | Confirm whether the cover is for the front or rear axle and whether your truck uses AAM or Dana fitment. |
| Chevy / GMC Silverado & Sierra | 2001–2025 selected 1500 / 2500HD / 3500HD applications | GM 8.5 / 8.6, GM 10.5, AAM 9.5 / 9.76, AAM 11.5 / 11.8 / 12 options | Confirm 1500 vs HD model, rear axle size, bolt count, and year-specific axle fitment. |
| Jeep Wrangler / Jeep SUV | Selected Jeep TJ, JK, JL, Wrangler, and older Jeep applications | Dana 30, Dana 35, Dana 44, Dana Advantek M186 / M200 options | Confirm front or rear axle, Dana model, and whether your Jeep uses standard Dana or Advantek fitment. |
Before checkout, compare the product photos with your factory cover and count the bolts on your current axle cover. This is one of the fastest ways to catch a wrong axle match before ordering.
Confirm by Axle Type, Bolt Count, and Front or Rear Position
After narrowing by vehicle, use this table to confirm the exact axle family, bolt count, and front or rear position. A Ford 9.75 cover will not fit a Ford 8.8 axle, and a standard Dana 44 cover should not be assumed to fit a Dana Advantek axle.
| Axle / Cover Type | Position | Bolt Count | Common Vehicles | Buyer Check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AAM 11.5 / 11.8 / 12 | Rear | 14 bolts | Selected GM HD and Ram HD trucks | Confirm axle size, model year, and cover shape before ordering. |
| AAM 9.25 | Front or rear, depending on application | Usually 14 bolts | Selected Dodge Ram 2500 / 3500 and Ram applications | Do not order by “Ram” alone. Confirm the actual AAM axle model. |
| Dana 30 / Dana 35 / Dana 44 | Front or rear, depending on axle | Usually 10 bolts | Jeep and selected off-road platforms | Confirm Dana model and whether the cover is for the front or rear axle. |
| Dana 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 | Front or rear, depending on application | Usually 10 bolts | Selected Ford, GM, Dodge, and Ram trucks | Match the axle position, bolt count, and housing shape. |
| Dana M235 / Dana M275 | M235 front, M275 rear | 14 bolts | Selected late-model Ford Super Duty trucks | Confirm whether your truck needs the front M235 cover or rear M275 cover. |
| Ford 8.8 / 9.75 / 10.25 / 10.5 | Mostly rear axle applications | 10 or 12 bolts, depending on axle | Ford F-150, F-250, F-350, and selected Ford trucks | Ford axle names look similar but are not interchangeable. |
| GM 8.5 / 8.6 / 10.5 | Rear | 10 or 14 bolts, depending on axle | Selected Chevrolet, GMC, Silverado, Sierra, Savana, and HD trucks | Confirm 1500 vs HD model and count the cover bolts. |
| Dana Advantek M186 / M200 | M186 front, M200 rear | Usually 12 bolts | Selected 2018–2025 Jeep Wrangler applications | Confirm M186 or M200 fitment instead of assuming standard Dana compatibility. |
Why Upgrade from a Factory Differential Cover?
Factory stamped-steel differential covers are usually designed for basic protection and cost-efficient production. An aftermarket aluminum differential cover is often chosen for better serviceability, added fluid capacity, improved heat management, and easier oil inspection.
For diesel trucks that tow trailers, haul heavy loads, or run long highway miles in hot weather, differential oil temperature and service access matter more than they do on a light daily driver.
- Heat management: Finned aluminum covers increase surface area and can help shed heat during towing, hauling, or long highway use.
- Added fluid capacity: Some covers hold more gear oil, which can help stabilize oil temperature under sustained load.
- Magnetic drain plug: Helps capture fine metal particles from normal gear wear and makes fluid changes cleaner.
- Oil monitoring: A sight glass or dipstick can make fluid checks easier when used according to the product instructions.
- Stronger construction: A thicker aluminum cover can add protection and help support the differential housing area under load or trail use.
An upgraded cover will not fix worn gears, bearing noise, incorrect backlash, contaminated oil, or internal differential damage. If your axle already has noise, vibration, or metal debris in the oil, inspect the differential before assuming a new cover will solve the problem.
Which Differential Cover Type Fits Your Use Case?
| Use Case | What to Look For | Best Match |
|---|---|---|
| Daily driving | Direct fit, proper sealing, correct oil level, easy service | Vehicle-specific rear differential cover with confirmed axle fitment. |
| Towing and heavy loads | Cooling fins, added capacity, magnetic drain plug, strong construction | Aluminum cover for AAM, Dana, Ford, or GM heavy-duty rear axles. |
| Off-road and trail use | Reinforced profile, clearance check, drain plug access, leak control | Dana, Jeep, Ford, GM, or Ram axle-specific differential cover. |
| Lifted trucks | Track bar clearance, spare tire clearance, sight glass position, fill level accuracy | Cover matched to axle model, suspension setup, and operating angle. |
What to Check Before Ordering
Most fitment issues happen when buyers order by vehicle name alone. Before adding a differential cover to your cart, confirm these details.
- Vehicle and axle: Confirm year, model, axle tag, axle code, or casting marks.
- Front or rear position: Front and rear differential covers are usually different.
- Bolt count and cover shape: Count the bolts and compare the gasket shape with your factory cover.
- Clearance: Check track bars, spare tires, skid plates, lift kits, and steering parts.
- Fluid capacity: Confirm the correct gear oil type and refill amount after installation.
Installation Notes
Most differential cover installs are straightforward, but sealing and refill procedure matter. Drain the old gear oil, clean the mating surface, check for metal debris, use the correct gasket or gear-oil-resistant RTV method, torque the bolts evenly, and refill with the correct gear oil type and amount according to the product instructions.
Related Drivetrain Service Parts
If you are refreshing drivetrain fluid service parts for towing, hauling, or long-mileage truck use, you may also want to inspect related upgrades such as a transmission pan or broader transmission system parts. A differential cover helps with axle serviceability, while the rest of the drivetrain still needs proper fluid control, cooling, and maintenance.

Highly recommend for 2009-14 F150 4x4 3.5 ecobeast!
Installed myself at home took a little over a week for everything to show up, install went tough but that was the trucks fault parts were all good and the tunes run smooth, getting a little over 2 mpg average better fuel economy definitely worth the money.
Made my truck run much better without having to worry about the grid heater bolt falling down in cylinder 6
So far it looks nice and fit pretty well.
Welds look solid and professional quality, I have not installed them yet but I did put them in place under truck to ensure length and thus far everything looks good. I will give an update after install and on the road with them
Product came in earlier than expected and is made out of high quality materials. SPELAB hasn't let me down yet!!
The product installed perfectly high-quality superior part. For my 2022 f350. Coolant reroute kit.
Everything works great all parts fit hangers fit have pictures if needed
This is a really nice set up inexpensive but well-made. Make sure you use 1/4 inch drive and torque wrench, if you get the half socket 10mm and multi size extensions even better it’ll make getting those two back bolts easy
Makes truck breathe better and will definitely blow your y bridge out so do that while you’re in there looks great and fits up pretty good not perfect
Installed this SPELAB EGR Throttle Valve Delete on my 6.7 Cummins and the fitment was perfect. The kit was well made, installation was straightforward, and all the necessary parts were included. Everything lined up as it should and the truck runs great. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a quality replacement component.
I originally had the Banks Monster Ram intake with grid heater delete, and costed $1200. Recently I decided to give Spelab a try for their 3.5” pusher style intake with grid heater delete. Fraction of the price and performs the same. Only regret I have was my purchase of Banks.
Great product
Good product fast sipping was not that bad of a job
Nicely done ✅
Differential Cover FAQ - SPELAB Auto Parts
Start with your vehicle year and model, then confirm the axle model, bolt count, front or rear position, and cover shape. Vehicle fitment helps narrow the search, but axle details confirm the actual fit.
Check the axle tag, VIN-based axle code, service records, casting marks, factory cover shape, and bolt count. If the vehicle has been modified or axle-swapped, inspect the axle itself.
Usually no. Front and rear axles often use different housings, cover shapes, fill plug positions, and clearance requirements. Always confirm whether the product is for the front axle or rear axle.
Not automatically. Standard Dana 44 and Dana Advantek axles may use different cover shapes and bolt patterns. If your Jeep uses M186 or M200 Advantek axles, choose a cover listed for that specific axle.
It can on some setups. Thicker covers with cooling fins or added capacity may extend farther than the factory cover. Check clearance if your truck has a lift kit, aftermarket track bar, skid plates, steering changes, or an oversized spare tire.
No. Some aftermarket covers place the fill plug higher for access, but overfilling can cause oil aeration, foaming, leaks, or fluid coming out of the axle vent. Follow the product instructions or factory fluid capacity guidance.
It depends on the axle and cover design. Some installations use gear-oil-resistant RTV, some use a gasket, and some can use either. Clean the mating surface carefully and follow the product instructions.
No. A cover will not fix worn gears, bad bearings, incorrect backlash, or internal axle damage. If the axle already makes noise, inspect the differential before replacing only the cover.
