Exhaust Cutout Kits
What Is an Exhaust Cutout?
An exhaust cutout is a valve installed in the exhaust system that allows drivers to switch between the factory muffler and a straight exhaust path. When the valve is closed, exhaust gases flow through the muffler for normal driving. When the valve opens, exhaust bypasses the muffler, producing a louder and deeper performance exhaust sound.
Electric exhaust cutouts are popular because they allow drivers to control the valve remotely. With the press of a button, you can switch between a quiet daily-driving exhaust note and a more aggressive sound.
SPELAB Exhaust Cutout Kits are available in sizes including 2", 2.25", 2.5", 3", and 4", supporting a wide range of vehicles from compact turbo cars to V8 muscle cars and diesel trucks.
If you're planning a custom exhaust system, an exhaust cutout is one of the easiest ways to add adjustable sound and improved exhaust flow.
How to Choose the Right Exhaust Cutout Size
The exhaust cutout diameter should exactly match the outer diameter of your vehicle’s exhaust pipe. Choosing the right size is crucial because it maintains optimal exhaust gas velocity and scavenging, while preventing excessive backpressure loss when the valve is closed.
- 2 inch – Small naturally aspirated engines
- 2.25 inch – Compact turbo vehicles
- 2.5 inch – Mid-size performance engines
- 3 inch – V8 muscle cars and performance trucks
- 4 inch – Diesel trucks and high horsepower builds (Note: For extreme builds with 5" exhaust systems, our 4" cutout can be easily installed using a 5" to 4" exhaust reducer/adapter.)
Tip: Measure your exhaust pipe diameter before ordering to ensure the correct fit.
SPELAB Exhaust Cutout Types
The videos below show real-world examples of how different exhaust cutout setups sound on actual vehicles. With the valve closed, exhaust gases pass through the muffler for normal daily driving. When the valve opens, exhaust bypasses the muffler and produces a deeper, more aggressive performance sound.
Each example also demonstrates a real installation so you can see how the system fits on different vehicles.
| Product Type | Description | Sound & Installation Example |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Exhaust Cutout | Classic clamp-on or weld-on design that works well for most custom exhaust builds. | Mustang GT Installation Example |
| 4.0" Exhaust Cutout | Large-diameter design built to withstand high Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGTs), commonly used on diesel trucks or high horsepower V8 builds. | 392 Charger Installation |
| One-Piece Exhaust Cutout | Integrated construction that reduces connection points and simplifies installation. | Ram SRT-10 Example |
| Be-Cut Pipe Exhaust Cutout | A no-cut installation design that replaces a section of the exhaust pipe. | Honda Civic Sport Example |
| Vacuum Exhaust Cutout | Uses engine vacuum instead of electric motors for valve operation. Highly reliable in harsh under-car environments. | Camaro Z28 Example |
| Be-Cut + Vacuum Exhaust Cutout | Combines no-cut pipe installation with vacuum valve control. | 1.8T Beetle Example |
| Plum-Shaped Exhaust Cutout | A unique design sometimes used on custom show builds. | Ram 1500 Example |

FAQ
Q: Will the cutout valve get stuck from exhaust soot or carbon build-up?
A: No. SPELAB cutout valves are built with high-torque gear motors and anti-seize bearings designed to push through thick carbon deposits and diesel soot. They are tested to operate reliably even in high-heat and high-emission performance setups.
Q: Are exhaust cutouts legal?
A: The short answer is: No for public streets, but Yes for off-road and track use.
In almost all 50 U.S. states (and many other countries), operating a vehicle with an open exhaust cutout on public highways or city streets is illegal. Local vehicle codes explicitly prohibit "muffler bypasses" or any device installed to amplify exhaust noise above factory decibel limits.
However, purchasing, installing, and using an exhaust cutout is completely legal for closed-course track events, drag racing, car shows, and dedicated off-road applications. As a responsible driver, you should always keep the valve closed during daily street driving to comply with local noise ordinances.
Q: Can I install an exhaust cutout myself?
A: Yes. Many clamp-on or no-cut designs can be installed by enthusiasts with basic tools.
Q: Do exhaust cutouts improve performance?
A: Yes. When open, the valve allows exhaust gases to bypass the restrictive factory muffler, which significantly reduces backpressure, lowers EGTs, and improves throttle response on both turbocharged and naturally aspirated engines.

Hoping to gain a sponsorship soon I use yalls parts on my personal build and customers builds
Very good quality kit and was easy to install!! I highly recommend it!!
Im very pleased with the intake horn and grid heater delete for my Cummins 6.7.
Instalation was straight forward and the kit came with everything required.
Excellent quality product that definitely delivers a difference in throttle response. You can tell that the engine is breathing much better. I highly recommend this to everyone out there. Shipping was fast too!! And to top it off, the dreaded engine killing grid heater plate is gone for good! Look how bad the grid heater was after only 46,000 mi. You can barely see thru the grids. Ridiculous design by Cummins/Ram. They should be ashamed for putting that piece of junk on such a good engine. Next up, turbo tubes!
Fit my 08 6.4 extended cab just fine. Sounds great with a 5x7 tip
I have always used there products and customers always are happy
Was on the fence between the 4 or 5…but definitely glad I went with the 5! Fits perfect and sounds amazing!!
Wow. That says it all. Fast shipping, looks great big thing is what a difference it makes from stock things just act different with the more air flow.
Installed CCV catch can kit for a 2016 Ford F250 very easy to install so far no issues would recommend/seems to be very good quality/
The parts were packaged well and customer service was amazing. The instructions were super easy to follow and overall layout of the kit made the install go like a breeze. I only took three hours to install the kit and I’ve hadn’t had a single problem with it. You can hear a difference in the truck and the mileage has gone up. I would recommend this kit.
Perfect fit, very happy with my purchase
Everything is super high quality, and the absolute best price is could find if i had to complain about anything it would be the exhaust tip I wish the flange for the clamp was .1 longer to get a socket on it.
Product looks good and bolted on with ease. I used the factor fill hole for the first fill and it aligned perfectly with the ball floating in the middle of the sight glass. In the future I can just top fill and use the glass as the gauge. Very happy with it so far!
My spec lab EGR delete kit has been absolutely amazing. It was fast and easy to install and keep my truck running 5° cooler.
The installation went great just to remove the 2024 gmc cover vent you need a t40 bit and to hammer it in to get the security screws out. Love the look and over all installation God Bless.
