FAQS

The 5.8L Windsor V8 shipped in 1997–2003 Ford F-150 (10th gen), plus 1997–1999 F-250. It also appeared in 1994–1995 F-150 with the Lightning package. Always confirm your VIN's 8th digit before ordering.

2V (two-valve) heads are factory on most F-150 5.8L engines and offer better low-end torque. 4V (four-valve) heads came on the 1996–2001 SVT Lightning and offer higher RPM power. Aftermarket headers are often head-specific—check before buying.

Long-tube headers remove catalytic converters and alter O2 sensor readings, which usually triggers a check engine light. A tuning module or hand-held tuner is recommended to recalibrate fuel trims and avoid running rich or lean.

Headers alone rarely improve MPG on a stock or daily-driven truck. The main gains are throttle response and exhaust flow at higher RPMs. Combined with a cold-air intake and a tune, modest mileage gains are possible.

Check the product listing for a CARB EO number. Most aftermarket long-tube headers are not smog-legal in California unless explicitly certified. Shorty headers with cats are more likely to be compliant.

Yes—always replace the header gaskets (and optionally the exhaust manifold-to-flange seals) when installing headers. Factory exhaust manifold gaskets are often partially reusable, but header gaskets should be fresh for a proper seal.

Header installation on a 5.8L Windsor is intermediate–advanced. It requires removing the steering shaft, unbolting steering components, and working in tight spaces. Budget 4–6 hours and use anti-seize on all bolts. A lift is highly recommended.

Most kits offer either cat-back (replaces rear section only) or header-back (full system). If running long-tube headers without cats, a full y-pipe to axle-back setup is typical. Match your desired sound level and emissions compliance.

On a 1997–2003 F-150, the factory warranty is long expired. If you have an extended warranty on a later-model truck with a swapped 5.8L, aftermarket headers may be flagged as modifications—check with your provider.

On a stock 5.8L Windsor (240–260 hp), expect 10–20 hp at the wheels from headers alone with a tune. Combined with intake and exhaust, gains of 25–40 hp are realistic. The stock 5.8L responds best to forced induction, not bolt-ons.
