This guide focuses on gasoline cat-back systems for the 2003-2008 Nissan 350Z, Infiniti G35 coupe, and 2015-2019 Ford F-150 with the 2.7L, 3.5L, or 5.0L gasoline engine. It is not a diesel-pickup exhaust guide. A Power Stroke, Cummins, or Duramax DPF-back system brings different aftertreatment, regeneration, sensor, fitment, and road-use questions.
A polished tip and a loud cold start still do not establish build quality. The system has to seal when cold and hot, hang without preload, clear the body and axle under real load, control cabin drone, and retain every emissions component the vehicle is required to use.

The Three Tests a Good System Must Pass
- Identity test: The part number, engine, model year, body style, wheelbase, flange, and hanger layout match the actual vehicle.
- Construction test: The pipe, welds, muffler, flanges, brackets, clamps, and coating are suitable for the vehicle and climate.
- Installed test: The finished system remains leak-free, does not strike the chassis, and produces acceptable sound through cold start, highway cruise, Payload, and heat cycles.
Skipping the first test is how a clean-looking kit becomes a cut-and-weld job. Skipping the third is how a quiet lift-bay installation becomes a drone or rattle on the highway.
Verify Fitment Before Looking at Sound Clips
Use the VIN and inspect the truck or car underneath. A shared engine does not guarantee a shared exhaust. Cab, bed, wheelbase, coupe versus roadster construction, bumper openings, differential clearance, and factory flange geometry can change the answer.

A Bolt-on label means the kit was designed around a known configuration. It does not promise that a bent hanger, collision repair, aftermarket hitch, lift, spare tire, or previous exhaust Mod will leave the truck in that configuration.
Pipe Diameter: Measure the Restriction, Not the Tip
Pipe area is calculated with A = pi x r2. That makes a 3-inch round pipe about 7.07 square inches. Two 2.25-inch pipes provide about 7.95 square inches combined, roughly 12.5% more area than one 3-inch pipe. Two 2.5-inch branches provide about 9.82 square inches combined.

For a street 350Z or gasoline work-truck F-150, velocity, muffler construction, wall thickness, bends, and leak-free joints matter more than winning a diameter contest. A bigger tailpipe cannot repair a clogged catalyst, weak ignition, boost leak, dragging brake, or slipping transmission.

- Alloy disclosure: "Stainless steel" is incomplete. Ask whether the pipe, muffler shell, tips, and flanges are T304, T409, or another grade.
- Wall thickness: Thin tubing saves weight but can dent, resonate, crack near hangers, and be harder to weld cleanly.
- Bend quality: A mandrel bend should retain a consistent cross-section without a crushed inside radius or deep wrinkles.
- Weld penetration: Look for continuous beads, no pinholes, no undercut, no visible cracks, and no sharp weld wire left inside the tube.
- Flange flatness: A warped flange may tighten down crooked, crush a gasket unevenly, and leak again after heat cycles.
- Hanger geometry: Hangers should enter the isolators without pulling the system sideways or holding the rubber at full stretch.
- Clamp design: A band clamp can preserve pipe shape and serviceability. An overtightened U-bolt clamp can deform the tube and make future disassembly rough.
- Service parts: Confirm whether gaskets, clamps, isolators, silencers, tips, and individual pipe sections can be replaced without buying the whole system again.

Install the System Without Preload
Support the vehicle on rated equipment over solid ground and let the exhaust cool completely. Do not crawl under a vehicle held only by a jack. There is no safe universal torque value for every thin-wall clamp, flange, gasket, and bolt grade. Use the kit instructions or the fastener manufacturer's specification. An impact gun can crush a slip joint before the rest of the system is aligned.
Before final tightening, check clearance to the driveshaft, differential, brake and fuel lines, spare tire, hitch, wiring, heat shields, body, axle, and bumper. A Rigid exhaust still needs room to grow when hot and move on its rubber isolators.
Cold Leak Test: Find Problems Before the Pipe Gets Hot
- Move the vehicle outdoors, chock the wheels, set the parking brake, and keep people clear of the tailpipe.
- With the system stone cold, start the engine and listen at each joint for a sharp tick, puff, or hiss.
- Use a strip of light paper near a suspected joint to look for pulsing gas movement. Keep hands, clothing, paper, and tools away from belts, fans, and heating exhaust parts.
- Look for condensate tracks at a joint. Water at a designed muffler drain is different from water pushed through a bad flange.

Hot Test: Repeat the Inspection After Expansion
A system can seal cold and leak hot. Run a full heat cycle outdoors, let the exhaust cool completely, then inspect it again.
- Check for fresh soot at flanges, slip joints, muffler seams, and welds.
- Look for a tip that shifted toward the bumper or a hanger isolator pulled tight.
- Inspect for melted plastic, browned wiring, damaged undercoating, or a heat shield that now touches the pipe.
- Recheck clamp seating and flange fasteners to the supplied procedure after the first heat cycle.
- Listen for a metallic rattle during startup, shutdown, and a light throttle snap. A contact rattle is not the same as exhaust drone.
Some manufacturing oil or fingerprints can create a brief odor during the first heat cycle. Persistent smoke, cabin fumes, bubbling coating, or a burning wire or plastic smell is not a normal break-in feature.
Test Sound and Drone with a Repeatable Route
Do not compare one seller's outdoor phone clip with your stock exhaust inside a garage. Record the baseline and new system with the same phone position, windows, HVAC setting, road, load, tire pressure, fuel, transmission mode, and ambient conditions.

California's 95 dBA provision applies to qualifying vehicles under 6,000 pounds GVWR and requires the current SAE test method; heavier vehicles use different limits. Check Clearance at Real Payload

Performance Claims That Need Proof
The current product pages include claims ranging from 10-15 hp for the 350Z single-exit system to 15-25 hp or added low-end torque for the F-150 system. Those numbers should not be treated as guaranteed wheel horsepower without a complete test report.
