Your vehicleu2019s ignition switch, also referred to as a starter switch, is the electrical switch that is activated by the ignition lock cylinder when the vehicleu2019s key is inserted into it and is turned. This switch is commonly located in the steering column, on the dash, or in the center console. When you insert and then turn and hold the key at the u201cstartu201d position, power is supplied from your vehicleu2019s battery to the starter motor to start the engine.
In addition, an ignition lock cylinder also serves as a vehicleu2019s most basic theft deterrent because it makes it harder for other people to drive it without the proper key. If you let the cylinder get to the point where you can no longer turn the key in the ignition, you will end up having to replace the entire ignition switch assembly. How to replace the ignition switch?
- Disconnect the vehicle's battery.
- Remove the steering column cover bolts.
- Remove the steering column cover(s).
- Locate the ignition lock cylinder.
- Remove the cover on the ignition lock cylinder.
- Remove the Ignition lock cylinder.
- Remove the ignition lock cylinder from the housing.
- Loosen the screws on top of the ignition lock assembly.
- Install the new ignition lock and the old cylinder. Test the operation of the new ignition lock.
- Reconnect the battery terminals. Clear error codes with a scan tool.
