Duramax Up-Pipe

One Duramax Up Pipe for Six Engine Codes - and the Van It Won't Fit A Duramax up pipe is the pipe that carries exhaust from the manifolds into the turbo: gas leaves the heads, turns through this pipe, and only then reaches the turbine wheel. Get that direction wrong and every diagnosis that follows goes wrong with it, which is how soot at the back of the engine bay sends people shopping for a downpipe instead. Once the direction is straight, ordering is straightforward, because GM grouped this part by engine code rather than by model year. One Duramax up pipe here covers sixteen model years and five engine codes - LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM and LML, 2001 through 2016 - and the exception is not a pickup at all: it will not fit LGH-powered Express or Savana vans. Everything from 2017 on takes the L5P part instead. LB7 Through LML vs L5P: Where the Duramax Up Pipe Line Falls Engine code Years Trucks Which up pipe LB7 2001-2004 Silverado / Sierra 2500 3500 HD 2001-2016 Duramax up pipe LLY 2004.5-2005 Silverado / Sierra 2500 3500 HD 2001-2016 Duramax up pipe LBZ 2006-2007 Silverado / Sierra 2500 3500 HD 2001-2016 Duramax up pipe LMM 2007.5-2010 Silverado / Sierra 2500 3500 HD 2001-2016 Duramax up pipe LML 2011-2016 Silverado / Sierra 2500 3500 HD 2001-2016 Duramax up pipe (not LGH vans) L5P 2017-2023 Silverado / Sierra 2500 3500 HD L5P Duramax up pipe LGH Express / Savana vans Not compatible No fitment in this collection The 2017 split is the one that catches people. The L5P arrived with different turbo mounting and a different exhaust layout, so its Duramax up pipe is its own part, and there is no crossover in either direction between it and the earlier engines. Flanges First: 3-Bolt, 4-Bolt or V-Band Before comparing flow claims, look at what the ends of the pipe actually bolt to. The 2001-2016 Duramax up pipe uses a 3-bolt or 4-bolt flange where it meets the downpipe; the L5P layout is different again. If the truck is keeping its stock downpipe, the replacement has to arrive with a matching flange face, or the job stops the moment the old pipe comes out. Planning a downpipe later? Decide both at the same time. An up pipe and a downpipe bought separately with different flange styles is the most common way to end up with a mismatched pair on the bench and a truck on jack stands. 409 or 304: What the Material Choice Actually Buys These pipes come in 409 stainless (aluminized) or T304 stainless. Both handle the heat and both resist corrosion far better than the factory part; the difference is how long they keep looking presentable and how well they survive road salt. On a truck that winters in the rust belt and stays stock-height, T304 is worth the step up. On a work truck that will be coated in mud and salt either way, 409 does the job for less. What actually ends a Duramax up pipe is not the tubing - it is the flex section. The engine rocks on its mounts and the pipe grows when it is hot, and every bit of that movement lands on the flex joint. The upgrade replaces the failure-prone OEM joint with a reinforced section, and that single change is what turns a repeat leak into a permanent seal. L5P Buyers: EGR-Compatible or EGR-Modified The L5P Duramax up pipe is offered in several configurations - up pipe on its own, up pipe with downpipe, an EGR-compatible version, and an EGR version with the downpipe. If the truck drives on public roads and has to pass an inspection, the EGR-compatible version is the one that retains the factory emissions controls. Worth being direct about the alternative: removing or defeating emissions equipment on a road-registered vehicle is prohibited under federal law. Versions that modify the EGR system are intended for off-road and competition use, and it is the owner's responsibility to check state and local requirements before buying one. An up pipe that keeps the emissions equipment intact is an ordinary exhaust repair; the line is crossed by what else comes off the engine at the same time. Access: Why Duramax Up Pipe Jobs Are Quoted in Hours, Not Minutes The turbo and downpipe come out first. There is no way around removing the downpipe to reach the pipe behind it. Upper bolts are the hard part. On some of these trucks reaching the top fasteners means lifting the cab or raising the engine - which is why most owners hand this one to a shop. New gaskets at every joint. Reusing a crushed gasket to save a few dollars is how the job gets done twice. Anti-seize on all hardware. Exhaust bolts on a truck that has never been apart are the usual reason a four-hour job becomes a weekend. Choose Your Duramax Up Pipe Fitment 2001-2016 6.6L - LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML. Up pipe and downpipe for Silverado and Sierra 2500 / 3500 HD. Not compatible with LGH Duramax Express or Savana models. 2017-2023 6.6L L5P. Dedicated up pipe for Sierra and Silverado 2500 / 3500 HD, available on its own, with a downpipe, or in an EGR-compatible configuration. Find the engine code before you order - it is on the build sheet, and on these trucks it tells you more than the model year ever will.
